North East India

The eight states of India's north-east are the part of the country the rest of India knows least — and that's exactly why they're here. This section covers the Seven Sisters and Sikkim: Nagaland's Hornbill festival and its many tribes, Majuli, the world's largest river island, the living root bridges of Meghalaya, Manipur's dance and its women-run markets, Mizo and Khasi and Bodo ways of life. Much of this rarely makes it into the national story. These articles try to fix that — the history, the culture, and the people of a region long more connected to South-East Asia than most textbooks admit.
