Aamir Khan removed almost every external check on his own work, and both the best and the worst of his career follow from it
He has not been to an Indian film awards ceremony in about thirty years.
Accounts of what set it off differ. Some point at the 1992 Filmfare ceremony and some at the one in 1996, where he was nominated for Rangeela and did not win. His own explanation has stayed consistent and is less dramatic than the gossip: he has nothing against awards in principle, he simply will not attend one he does not rate, and the National Film Awards are the exception he makes.
“I have no faith in them so I would prefer to stay away,” is how he put it. Thirty years is a long time to keep that up in a business that runs almost entirely on being seen in the right rooms.

This matters, because opting out means something different depending on where you start.
His father Tahir Hussain was a producer and his uncle Nasir Hussain was a director. He appeared as a child in Yaadon Ki Baaraat in 1973, and his first film as a lead, Qayamat Se Qayamat Hai, was made by the family. He did not have to force a door.
Shah Rukh Khan, working in the same decade, had to build a company because nobody was going to hand him one. Aamir Khan had the connections from birth and chose to stop using the parts of the system he considered worthless. He was as inside as it is possible to be, and he spent the following decades removing himself from the parts of it he did not want.
Then he stopped doing volume
Through the 1990s he worked like everybody else, which is to say constantly.
There were hits and there were misses and there were a lot of them. From about 2001 the pattern changes completely. One film at a time, long gaps between them, and a four year absence after Dil Chahta Hai before he came back with Rang De Basanti.
Between 2001 and 2025 he has appeared in roughly a film a year, against a norm of three or four. The perfectionist reputation is mostly this. It is not a temperament, it is a scheduling decision, and it is only available to somebody who can afford to say no for four years at a stretch.

He set up Aamir Khan Productions in 1999 and its first film was Lagaan.
A period drama about a village cricket match against colonial officers, shot in Kutch, running close to four hours, is not a proposal any studio would have green lit. It was nominated for the Academy Award for best foreign language film and won the National Film Award for best popular film.
Ashutosh Gowariker had reportedly been turned down everywhere with it before Khan agreed to produce it himself. He directed Taare Zameen Par himself in 2007, about a dyslexic child, at a point when most Indian parents had no vocabulary for that at all. Dangal in 2016 took more than two thousand crore rupees worldwide.
What he did with the leverage
In 2012 he used his commercial weight to buy prime time television and then talk about female foeticide on it.
Satyamev Jayate ran for three seasons on subjects the industry does not go near: child sexual abuse, dowry, caste, medical malpractice. It was broadcast on Doordarshan alongside a private network, which put it in front of an audience no film reaches.
Since 2016 he and Kiran Rao have run the Paani Foundation, which sets villages across Maharashtra competing against each other at water conservation. The prize-giving is large enough that the state’s chief minister attends it.

There is a bill for all of this and it was presented in 2022, after two decades in which the method had looked unarguable.
Laal Singh Chaddha, which he produced and starred in, failed badly. It is worth being plain about why that is structurally interesting rather than just unfortunate. He had spent twenty years dismantling every outside check on his judgement. No awards he respected, no studio above him, his own production house, his own schedule, his own final cut.
The arrangement that made Lagaan possible is the same arrangement that left nobody in the room able to tell him no. You do not get one without the other, and he has never pretended otherwise.
