Academically, Anupam attended DAV School in Shimla, where he was a self-confessed backbencher, never scoring above 35 percent, yet bubbling with curiosity and creativity. While his numbers weren’t impressive, his love for theatre thrived, largely thanks to a kind PT teacher who always encouraged him. Passion for acting began to blossom in these early years, and the stage became his sanctuary, nurturing his self-expression.

Chasing Dreams: Early Struggles

After finishing school, Anupam Kher reluctantly entered Government College, Sanjauli, to study economics, acceding to family expectations. However, his heart beat for the stage, prompting him to borrow ₹100 from his mother’s temple offerings—a sum that would forever change his destiny. This money helped him enroll at Punjab University, Chandigarh, to study Indian theatre, marking the first decisive step in the career journey of Anupam Kher.

His ambitions saw him graduate from the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi in 1978. The rigorous discipline and creative camaraderie at NSD deepened his understanding of acting, and his friendship with future stalwart Satish Kaushik was forged during this time. Struggling to make ends meet, Anupam and Kaushik would sneak into wedding feasts by pretending to be theatre professionals from Germany—an anecdote that still brings a twinkle to Anupam’s eyes.
